Le 21 mai 1943, l'Italie échangea avec l'Allemagne 39 LeO 451 qu'elle avait capturés à l'usine SNCASE d'Ambérieu-en-Bugey (Lyon) contre 30 D.520s. 45 autres D.520 furent capturés à Montélimar, Orange, Istres et Aix-en-Provence : les archives italiennes indiquaient au 31 juillet 1943 que 35 D.520 avaient été convoyés par des pilotes en Italie et que 10 autres avaient été transférés en train.
On 21st May, 1943, Italians exchanged with Germans 39 LeO 451 that they captured at the SNCASE factory in Ambérieu-les-Bugey (France) with 30 D.520s. 45 other D.520s were captured in Montelimar, Orange, Istres and Aix-en-Provence (Southern France) : the italian archives mentionned on 31st July 1943 that 35 D.520s were flown by pilots to Italy and that 10 others were transfered by train.

Au total donc, 75 D.520 furent utilisés par la Regia Aeronautica et affectés à 9 Gruppi dont les 13°, 22°, 24°, 59° et 161° pour affronter les bombardiers alliés. Les pilotes italiens comparaient le D.520 au Macchi MC 200 Saetta ; ils appréciaient le canon HS 404 de 20 mm du D.520, son cockpit; sa radio et sa capacité à ratrapper une vrille mais n'aimaient pas son train d'atterissage plus faible et sa trop petite capacité en munitions.
In total then, 75 D.520s were used by the Regia Aeronautica and assigned to 9 Gruppi in particular the 13°, 22°, 24°, 59° and 161° to face allied bombers. The italian pilots used to compare the D.520 with the Macchi MC 200 Saetta ; they appreciated the HS404 20 mm gun of the D.520, its cockpit, its radio set and its easy recovery from a spin but they did'nt like its weak undercarriage and its small ammunition capacity.
• 8° Gruppo (92°, 93°, 94° Squadriglie)
Les 3 premiers furent affectés au 2° Stormo C.T. (Caccia Terrestre - Chasse de jour), constitué des 13° et 8° Gruppi et basé à l'aérodrome de Turin-Caselle pour la défense de la zone industrielle de Turin. Le 8 février 1943, le 8° Gruppo possédait 9 D.520, les n° 353, 413, 421, 426, 461, 503, 508, 563 et 564. Le 21 (ou 24) février, il céda les n° 413, 421, 503 et 508 au 22° Gruppo. En mars, il reçut les n° 515, 533, 524 et 526 réparés par la Squadra Riparazione Aeromobili et Motori (S.R.A.M.) d'Albenga. En avril, les n° 353, 426, 461, 515, 524, 526, 533, 554 (564 ?) et 563 furent transférés au 59° Gruppo Intercettori. Le 8° Gruppo fut alors rééquipé de Macchi MC 200.
The first 3 units were assigned to 2° Stormo C.T. (Caccia Terrestre - Fighters unit), made of 13° and 8° Gruppi and based at Torino-Caselle airfield for the defence of Torino's industrial area. On the 8th February, 1943, the 8° Gruppo had 9 D.520s, the # 353, 413, 421, 426, 461, 503, 508, 563 et 564. On the 21st (or 24th) February, it sent the # 413 , 421, 503 and 508 to the 22nd Gruppo. In March, the 8th group received # 515, 533, 524 and 526 fixed by the Squadra Riparazione Aeromobili and Motori (S.R.A.M.) from Albenga. In April, # 353, 426, 461, 515, 524, 526, 533, 554 (564 ?) and 563 were transfered to the 59° Gruppo Intercettori. The 8° Gruppo was then re-equipped with Macchi Mc 200.

• 22° Gruppo (359° Squadriglia)
Le 21 (ou 24) février 1943, la 94° Squadriglia du 8° Gruppo céda les n° 413, 421, 503 et 508 à la 359° Squadriglia du 22° Gruppo du Capitaine Vittorio Minguzzi pour défendre Naples contre les raids des B-24. (qui reçut également les n° 451, 516 et 522 du Centro Sperimentale de Guidonia). C'est le 1er Mars 1943 que le Capitaine Minguzzi, pilotant le seul D.520 engagé avec 10 MC 200, 11MC 202 et 2 Me 210 allemands contre des B-24, obtint la 1ère victoire d'un D.520 italien en abattant un Liberator. En mai, le 22° Gruppo reçoit de la SNCASE de Toulouse les n° 575, 597, 598, 668, 672, 678, 679 et 680 (mais le 668 fut détruit à l'atterrissage lors de l'escale du Luc). Fin juin, il restait 9 D.520 dont 4 disponibles.
On the 21st (or 24th) February, the 94° Squadriglia of 8° Gruppo sent the # 413 , 421, 503 and 508 to 359° Squadriglia of the 22nd Gruppo of Captain Vittorio Minguzzi to protect Naples against B-24s raids (which received also # 451, 516 and 522 from Centro Sperimentale of Guidonia). It's on 1st March 1943 that Captain Minguzzi, flying the only D.520 engaged with 10 MC 200s, 11 MC 202s and 2 German Me 210s against B-24s, claimed the 1st victory of an Italian D.520 by shooting down a Liberator. In May, the 22° Gruppo received from SNCASE of Toulouse (France) the # 575, 597, 598, 668, 672, 678, 679 et 680 (but the 668 was destroyed when landing at the stopover at Le Luc). In late June, 9 D.520 were remaining, including 4 operational.
• 161° Gruppo (164°, 371° Squadriglie)

Les D.520 n° 520, 521 et 525 furent envoyés du S.R.A.M. d'Albenga au 161° Gruppo Autonomo le 3 mars 1943, suivis des n° 509 et 527. Puis d'autres D.520 furent affectés (en 4 fois) aux escadrilles du 161° Gruppo dans le Sud de l'Italie, les 162ème, 163ème et 164ème Squadriglia basées respectivement à Grottaglie, Crotone et Reggio Calabria.
The D.520s # 520, 521 and 525 were assigned from S.R.A.M. of Albenga to the 161° Gruppo Autonomo on March 3rd, followed by # 509 and 527. Then other D.520s were assigned (in 4 times) to Squadrons of 161° Gruppo in Southern Italy, the 162nd, 163rd and 164th Squadriglia respectively based at Grottaglie, Crotone and Reggio Calabria.

Le 25 mai, le Tenente Mazitelli partagea une victoire sur un B-24 à bord d'un D.520 de la 371° Squadriglia. Mi-juin 1943, 7 autres D.520 furent livrés au Gruppo (un 8°, le n° 671 fut abandonné au Luc pour problèmes techniques) : le 161° Gruppo comptait ainsi 13 D.520 affectés aux 164ème et 371ème Squadriglie.
On May 25th, the Tenente Mazitelli shared an air kill, a B-24, on board a D.520 of 371° Squadriglia. Mid-June 1943, 7 other D.520s were delivered to the Gruppo (an 8th one, # 671 was left at Le Luc - France - due to technical issues) : the 161° Gruppo had then 13 D.520s assigned to 164° and 371° Squadriglie.

Le 25 juin 1943 eut lieu un combat acharné du 161° Gruppo au cours duquel 14 MC 202 et 1 D.520 (Serg. m. Stella) affrontèrent plus de 100 bombardiers américains. Les pilotes italiens revendiquèrent 7 bombardiers mais leur commandant, le Magg. Pietro Serini fut tué. Courant juillet, les D.520 du 161° Gruppo furent progressivement mis hors d'usage. Lors de l'armistice de septembre, le Groupe était à Castiglione del Lago et s'apprêtait à se rééquiper de SAI 207.
On June 25th, 1943 occured an important fight of 161 ° Gruppo when 14 MC 202s and 1 D.520 (Serg. m. Stella) faced more than 100 American bombers. The Italian pilots claimed 7 bombers but their commander, Magg. Pietro Serini was killed. In July, the D.520s of 161° Gruppo became gradually out of order. During the armistice of September, the Group was at Castiglione del Lago and was about to be re-equip with SAI 207.

• 13° Gruppo (78°, 82° Squadriglie)
En juillet, le 13° Gruppo (77°, 78° et 82° Sq.), basé depuis le 14 à Metato, reçut de la 358° Squadriglia Intercettori 12 ou 13 D.520. Le 20 juillet, le Gruppo avait encore 12 D.520 dont les n°573, 653, 656, 681, 682, 95935, 95936 à la 78° Sq. et les n° 156, 534, 589, 616, 675 à la 82° Sq.
In July, the 13° Gruppo (77°, 78° and 82° Sq.), since the 14th based at Metato, received from the 358° Saquadriglia Intercettori 12 or 13 D.520s. On th 20th July, the Gruppo still had 12 D.520s including # 573, 653, 656, 681, 682 and MM95935, 95936 to the 78° Sq. and # 156, 534, 589, 616, 675 to the 82° Sq.

Fin août, le 13° Gruppo céda 13 D.520 (il en aurait récupéré un 13° ?) au 24° Gruppo en attendant d'être rééquipé en Reggiane Re 2005. Après l'armistice italien de septembre 1943, les allemands retrouvèrent 15 D.520 à Metato.
Late August, the 13° Gruppo sent 13 D.520s (it would have get a 13th one ?) to the 24° Gruppo and waited to be re-equipped with Reggiane Re 2005. After the italian armistice in September 1943, the Germans found 15 D.520s at Metato.

Dernier groupe à utiliser des D.520, et revenant de Sardaigne, le 24° Gruppo remplaça le 13° Gruppo à Metato et reçut ses 13 D.520. D'autres D.520 lui auraitent été livrés par d'autres groupes. Le 8 septembre, le personnel du 24° Gruppo creva les pneus des appareils restant avant l'arrivée des Allemands.
Last group to use D.520s, and back from Sardinia, the 24° Gruppo replaced the 13° Gruppo at Metato and received its 13 D.520s. Other D.520 would have been delivered by other groups. On September 8th, the staff of 24° Gruppo burst the tires of remaining aircrafts before the arrival of the Germans.
• 167° Gruppo (303° Squadriglia)
La 303° Squadriglia du 167° Gruppo C.N. (Caccia Notturna - Chasse de Nuit) utilisa un D.520 de juillet 1943 au 23 août.
The 303° Squadriglia of 167° Gruppo C.N. (Caccia Notturna - Night Fight) used D.520 from July, 1943 to August 23rd.
• Sezione Intercettori (156° Squadriglia)
La 156° Squadriglia Intercettori (2° Gruppo Autonomo Intercettori), créée le 26 mai 1943, fut également équipée de D.520 (jusqu'à 6 appareils).
The 156° Squadriglia Intercettori (2° Gruppo Autonomo Intercettori), created on May 26th, 1943, was also equipped with D.520 (up to 6 aircrafts).
• 358° Squadriglia
La 358° Sq. également du 2° Gruppo Autonomo Intercettori, reçut en juillet 12 ou 13 D.520 du 59° Gruppo qu'elle céda quelques jours après au 13° Gruppo.
The 358° Sq., also from 2° Gruppo Autonomo Intercettori, received in July, 12 or 13 D.520 from 59° Gruppo and sent them a few days later to the 13° Gruppo.
• 41° Stormo Intercettori (59° - 60° Gruppi)
Le 41° Stormo Intercettori (Tenente Colonnello Mario Bonzano) eut ses 2 groupes équipés de D.520 : la 232° Sq. du 59° Gruppo (qui exploita les n° 426, 461, 515, 524, 95935 et 95941) et la 234° Sq. du 60° Gruppo (essentiellement pour l'entraînement). Puis le 59° Gruppo reçut les n° 575, 597, 598, 672, 678, 679 et 680. Ces D.520 furent engagés pour protéger Livourne, Pise et Florence contre les raids alliés à partir de mai.
The 41° Stormo Intercettori (Tenente Colonnello Mario Bonzano) had its 2 groups equipped with D.520 : the 232° Sq. of 59° Gruppo (which used # 426, 461, 515, 524, MM95935 and MM95941) and the 234° Sq. of 60° Gruppo (essentially for training). Then the 59° Gruppo received # 575, 597, 598, 672, 678, 679 and 680. These D.520 were used to protect Livourne, Pisa and Florence against the allied raids from May.
• 157° Gruppo (357, 371°, 384° Squadriglie)
Le 157° Gruppo Autonomo C.T. fut également équipé de quelques D.520 vraisemblablement en juin 1943.

• Centro Sperimentale di Guidonia
Le Centro Sperimentale hérita du D.520 n°451 en janvier 1943.
The Centro Sperimentale received the D.520 # 451 in Januray, 1943.
Après l'armistice italien, les D.520 de Metato seront amenés à Pistoia et Florence, puis à Gorizia Merna : leur trace est ensuite perdue mais il est probable qu'ils aient été utilisés dans les écoles allemandes.3 D.520 de l'ancien 24° Gruppo auraient été utilisés par l'armée de l'air de la nouvelle Repubblica Sociale Italiana pour l'entraînement mais ce n'est pas confirmé.
After the Italian armistice, the D.520 were flown from Metato to Pistoia and Florence, and then to Gorizia Merna : their track is then lost but it is likely that they were used in the German training schools. 3 D.520s of the former 24° Gruppo were probably used by the new Repubblica Sociale Italiana Air Force for training purposes but it is not confirmed.
