La Fliegerzielgeschwader II était une escadre chargée de tracter des cibles pour l'entraînement de la Flak en Belgique et dans le Nord de la France. Quelques Dewoitine D520 y furent affectés à partir de 1943, dont les SN+WE, SN+WS et SV+GB. L'unité fut évacuée en Belgique en juillet 1944. Un D520 fut retrouvé par les anglais à Grimbergen, un autre aurait été à Melsbroeck.
The Fliegerzielgeschwader II was a special unit used to tow targets for the Flak training in Belgium and Northern France. Some Dewoitine D520 were sent in the unit in 1943, including the SN+WE, SN+WS and SV+GB. The unit was evacuated in Belgium in July 1944. One D520 was found by english troops in Grimbergen, another one could have been in Melsbroeck.

La Bulgarie cherchant à acquérir des avions modernes, elle négocie avec l'Allemagne pour en obtenir. En mars 1943, l'Allemagne lui propose d'acquérir jusqu'à 150 D.520 dans le cadre du traité d'assistance germano-bulgare. Sofia en commanda d'abord 100 (en fait seuls 96 seront transférés et 24 autres commandés ne seront jamais livrés). Cela permettait en plus de standardiser les motorisations (Hispano-Suiza) avec les Avia 135 et Avia B-71. Une quarantaine de pilotes bulgares partent alors en formation à Nancy à la JG 107. 48 premiers D.520 arrivent en Bulgarie en août 1943, convoyés par des pilotes allemands, bulgares et français.
Trying to get modern aircrafts, Bulgaria negotiated with Germans to obtain from them. In March, 1943, Germany proposed to send up to 150 D.520 in accordance with the German-Bulgarian assistance pact. Sofia ordered at first 100 units (in fact only 96 were transferred and 24 others ordered were never delivered).It allowed also to standardize the motorizations (Hispano-Suiza) with Avia 135 and Avia B-71. About 40 Bulgarian pilots were sent at the JG 107 in Nancy (Eastern France) to be trained. 48 first D.520s arrived in Bulgaria in August 1943, flown by German, Bulgarian and French pilots.

En septembre, ils sont réceptionnés lors d'une cérémonie, en présence du colonel Karl von Schoenebek, à l'aérodrome de Karlovo et affectés au 6° Istrebitelen Polk (IP - Régiment de chasse) commandé par le Lieutenant-Colonel Vassil Valkov, en particulier aux 1er et 2ème Groupes (Capitaines R. Russew et N. Boschnakow). Le 14 novembre 1943, des B-25 Mitchell (12ème Air Force) escortés par des P-38 Lightning (82ème Fighter Group) bombardent la Bulgarie : des Bf 109 G-2 (du 3/6 de Bojourischte) et 6 D.520 du 2/6 de Wraschdebna décollent pour les intercepter. Les D.520 reviendront indemnes mais infructueux.
In September, they were taken over in a ceremony, in the presence of colonel Karl von Schoenebek, on Karlovo airfield and affected to the 6th istrebitelen Polk (IP - Fighter Regiment) leaded by Lieutenant-Colonel Vassil Valkov, specifically to the 1st and 2nd Groups (Captains R. Russew and N. Boschnakow). On November 14th, 1943, B-25 Mitchells (12th Air Force) escorted by P-38 Lightning (82nd Fighter Group) bombarded Bulgaria : Bf 109 G-2s (of 3/6 from Bojourischte) and 6 D.520 of 2/6 from Wraschdebna took off to intercept them. Le 24 novembre, 24 D.520 décollent de la base de Wrashdebna (avec 16 Me Bf 109 G-2) pour intercepter 17 B-24 de la 15th USAAF et 35 P-38 d'escorte qui attaquent Sofia. 3 (ou 4 ?) avions américains (2 B-24 et 1 P-38) sont abattus contre 1 Bf 109 bulgare perdu. Le 10 décembre, nouvelle offensive américaine : 60 B-24 et 60 P-38. Des chasseurs bulgares décollent dont 6 D.520 du 2ème Orliak (Wraschdebna) et 16 D.520 du 1er Orliak (Karlowo). Le chef de la 652ème Jato (escadrille) du 2/6, le Capitaine Pavel L. Pavlov, est tué aux commandes de son D.520.

On 10th December, new american attack : 60 B-24s and 60 P-38s. Bulgarian fighters took off including 6 D.520s of 2nd Orliak (Wraschdebna) and 16 D.520s of 1st Orliak (Karlowo). The squadron leader of 652nd Jato (squadron) of 2/6, Captain Pavel L. Pavlov, was killed in his D.520.

Le 20 décembre, nouvelle attaque massive des américains sur Sofia : le 6° IP envoie 40 avions dont 24 D.520 du 2/6 qui obtiendront 2 victoires, un B-24 abattu par le Lt Marinopolski (652ème Jato) et un P-38 abattu par le Lt Nedelcho Bonchev (sur un total revendiqué de 10 à 12 soit 3 B-24 et 7 à 9 P-38). Début 1944, l'aviation bulgare reçoit quelques D.520 supplémentaires pour renforcer ses défenses.
On 20th December, new massive attack of the Americans over Sofia : the 6th IP sent 40 aircrafts including 24 D.520s of 2/6 which claimed 2 victories, one B-24 shot down by Lt Marinopolski (652nd Jato) and one P-38 shot down by Lt Nedelcho Bonchev (out of a total of 10 to 12 victories claimed i.e. 3 B-24s and 7 to 9 P-38s). In early 1944, the Bulgarian air force received some extra D.520s to reinforce the defense of the country.

Le 10 janvier, une importante attaque de B-24, B-17 et P-38 a lieu sur Sofia. Parmi les défenseurs ce jour-là, 23 D.520 du 2ème Orliak, 16 Me 109 du 3ème Orliak et environ 30 Me 109 Allemands du I./JG 5. Les Bulgares revendiqueront 4 B-17 abattus, 4 P-38 et 3 B-17 endommagés pour 1 D.520 abattu et son pilote tué (Atanas Krastev).
On January 10th, a lot of B-24, B-17 and P-38 attacked Sofia. Among the defenders this day, 23 D.520s of the 2nd Orliak, 16 Me 109 of 3rd Orliak and around 30 German Me 109 of I./JG 5. Bulgarians claimed 4 B-17s shot down, 4 P-38s and 3 B-17s damaged for 1 D.520 shot down and its pilot killed (Atanas Krastev).

C'est le 30 mars 1944 qu'aura lieu la plus grosse attaque sur Sofia : 114 B-17 et 253 B-24 de la 15th Air Force protégés par plus de 150 P-38. Le I/6 fait décoller 28 D.520, le 2/6 en envoie 6 et le 3/6 envoie 6 Me 109 G-6. 4 Avia B-135 de l'Ecole de chasse seront également envoyés. Le I/6 abattra un bombardier et deux P-38 (1 P-38 par le Lt Bogdan Terziev, 1 B-17 par le Lt Bogdan Bogdanov et 1 P-38 par le S/Lt Vassil Schischkov) et le 2/6 deux bombardiers et un P-38 (le P-38 par le S/Lt Bogdan Jordanov).
On March 30th occured the largest attack over Sofia : 114 B-17s and 253 B-24s of the 15th Air Force protected by more than 150 P-38s. 28 D.520s of the I/6 took off, with 6 D.520s of the 2/6 and 6 Me 109 G-6 of the 3/6. 4 Avia B-135 from Bulgarian Fighter Pilot's School were also sent. The I/6 shot down one bomber and two P-38s (1 P-38 by Lt Bogdan Terziev, 1 B-17 by Lt Bogdan Bogdanov and 1 P-38 by S/Lt Vassil Schischkov) and the 2/6 two bombers and one P-38 (the P-38 by S/Lt Bogdan Jordanov).

Le 3/6 abattra 5 bombardiers et 1 P-38. Un Avia B-135, piloté par le Capitaine Krastyo Atanasov (Commandant de l'Ecole de Chasse Bulgare) abattra un B-17 en collaboration avec le Feldwebel Jordan Ferdinanov. Les pertes seront de 1 Me 109 au 3/6 et 4 ou 5 D.520 au I/6 (dont 2 tués, Jordan Kubadinow et le S/Lt Ivan Bojadschijev, et un blessé grave, le S/Lt Ivan Pasow).
The 3/6 shot down 5 bombers and 1 P-38. One Avia B-135, flown by Captain Krastyo Atanasov (Commander of the Bulgarian Flying School) shot down one B-17 in collaboration with Feldwebel Jordan Ferdinanov. The losses were 1 Me 109 at the 3/6 and 4 or 5 D.520s at the I/6 (among them 2 killed, Jordan Kubadinow and S/Lt Ivan Bojadschijev, and one seriously injured, S/Lt Ivan Pasow).

Le 17 avril, nouveau raid sur Sofia de 350 B-24 (en 4 vaques) escortés par des P-38 mais aussi des P-51 et P-47, que les pilotes bulgares, habitués aux double-queues des Lightning, confondront avec leurs Me 109 : 2 D.520 (ou 7 selon les sources) du 2/6 décollent ainsi qu'une trentaine de Me 109 G.
On April 17th, new raid over Sofia with 350 B-24s (in 4 waves) escorted by P-38s, but also P-51s and P-47s, that Bulgarian pilots confused with their Me 109 : 2 D.520s (or 7 according to another source) of the 2/6 and about 30 Me 109 G took off.

9 Me 109 seront abattus (6 pilotes tués) et a priori aucun D.520 contre seulement 2 B-24 et 1 P-51. Après ce raid, le Groupe est transféré au terrain d'Asen près de Kazanlak. Au 1er mai, 44 D.520 semblent encore disponibles.
9 Me 109s were shot down (6 pilots killed) but no D.520 versus 2 B-24s and 1 P-51. Aftrer this raid, the Group was sent at Asen airfield near Kazanlak. On May 1st, 44 D.520s were still airworthy.

La dernière victoire des D.520 Bulgares est remportée le 5 mai sur un B-17 par les Lt Nikola Kolev et Zachari Planinski (2ème Orliak) et Capitaine Marin Petrow (4ème Orliak, dotés de D.520). Le terrain de Karlowo sera bombardé en juin et quelques avions perdus.
The last victory of Bulgarian D.520s was claimed on May 5th on a B-17 by Lts Nikola Kolev and Zachari Planinski (2nd Orliak) and Captain Marin Petrow (4th Orliak, equipped with D.520s). Karlowo airfield was bombarded in June and some aircrafts were lost.

Au 1er septembre, 32 D.520 sont encore disponibles dont 15 (ou 16) en état de vol. Les D.520 bulgares auront abattu en tout au moins 11 avions alliés (5 B-17, 4 P-38 et 2 B-24), en auront endommagé 7 (4 P-38, 2 B-24 et 1 B-17) contre 7 D.520 perdus et 1 endommagé en combat. 8 à 10 D.520 auront été perdus sur accident et 8 pilotes tués dont 3 au combat.
On September 1st, 32 D.520s were still available among which 15 (or 16) airworthy. Bulgarian D.520s claimed at least 11 allied aircrafts shot down (5 B-17s, 4 P-38s and 2 B-24s), 7 damaged (4 P-38s, 2 B-24s and 1 B-17) versus 7 D.520s lost and 1 damaged in fight. 8 to 10 D.520s were lost on accident and 8 pilots killed (3 in fight).

Après le putsch communiste du 9 septembre, l'aviation Bulgare se retourne avec les Soviétiques contre les Allemands. Le 1er Orliak, le seul à avoir encore des D.520, est basé à Wraschdebna, le 6ème Régiment étant intégré à la 288ème Division de chasse soviétique.
After the communist putsch of September 9th, the Bulgarian aviation fighted with the Soviets against the Germans. The 1st Orliak, the only one to have still D.520, was based at Wraschdebna, the 6th Regiment being integrated into the 288th Division of Soviet Fighting.

Des missions d'escorte et de mitraillage au sol se succèderont. Le 14 septembre, un D.520 est abattu en mission d'escorte (pilote sauf) de bombardiers du I/5. Le 28, un autre est abattu par la Flak (pilote Sgt Assen Petrov tué).

Début Novembre, le 1er Orliak est affecté à Bojourischte. les dernières missions de guerre des D.520 ont lieu les 17 et 20 novembre ; puis les D.520 sont envoyés à l'arrière pour être remis en état et servir dans les écoles. En janvier 1945, le 1er Orliak dispose encore de 27 D.520. Ils seront ferraillés en 1947. L'épuration des élites par le nouveau régime communiste firent que le Colonel Vassil Valkow (qui fut commandant du 6° IP) et le Capitaine Marin Petrow (commandant du nouveau 4° Groupe) furent sommairement jugés et exécutés.
In early November, the 1st Orliak was sent to Bojourischte. The last war missions of D.520 occured on November 17th and 20th ; then the D.520s were sent behind to be reconditioned and to serve in schools. In January, 1945, the 1st Orliak still had 27 D.520s. They were destroyed in 1947.The purge of elites by the new communist regime made that Colonel Vassil Valkov (who was commander of 6th IP) and Captain Marin Petrow (commander of the new 4th Group) were briefly judged and executed.
